BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD BOX SET REVIEW
FOUR **** STARS
Buffalo Springfield are that rarest of beasts: an influential
1960s band whose recorded legacy hasn't been recycled into dust.
Classic-rock radio stations don't dig much deeper than their one
bona fide hit, "For What It's Worth," preferring instead to play
the songs of the band's splintered progeny: Crosby, Stills and
Nash, Poco, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Loggins and Messina, et
al. But though the Springfield lasted little more than two years
and struggled to release three albums, the group contributed as
much to rock & roll as its famous divorces. This long-overdue
four-disc box chronicles and illuminates that contribution.
The first three discs follow the group's recordings chronologically.
Buffalo Springfield (1966) introduced a tightly drilled quintet
whose music proposed the country-rock hyphen well before Dylan,
the Byrds or the Flying Burrito Brothers. The songwriting was
divided between second guitarist Stephen Stills ("Sit Down I Think
I Love You") and lead guitarist Neil Young ("Nowadays Clancy Can't
Even Sing"), and favored the voice of rhythm guitarist Richie
Furay, often in tandem with Stills as an updated Everly Brothers.
Unfortunately, inept production eliminated the subtlety and power
from their debut; superb bass player Bruce Palmer was especially
victimized. There was more energy and balance to Young's "Mr.
Soul" and Stills' "Rock & Roll Woman" from Buffalo Springfield
Again (1967), but the rest of the picture was becoming irreparably
fragmented, with three individual writer-singers overseeing their
own material and Stills challenging Young on lead guitar. The
album's pinnacle, Young's haunting art-song collaboration with
Jack Nitzsche on "Expecting to Fly," featured no other band members.
The band burned up the track so fast before hitting the wall that
Last Time Around (1968) had to be pieced together for posthumous
release.
Sadly, few tapes have surfaced to document the ferocity of the
band's stage performances. Box Set collects the few developed
songs that didn't make the albums (though they've rightly nixed
the clumsy nine-minute "Bluebird" that leaked out some years back).
The thirty-seven unreleased tracks include alternate takes and
mixes, sometimes superior solo demos (Stills' "Four Days Gone,"
Furay's "Sad Memory"), instrumentals (Young's twisty "Falcon Lake
[Ash on the Floor]"), and songs we would encounter later in their
careers ("Round and Round and Round" and "Old Laughing Lady" from
Young). The set's only real flaw is the redundant Disc Four, which
reprises the first two albums.
Buffalo Springfield were a great American band done in by their
overabundance of talent. They went from being an inspired idea
straight to a cherished memory without letting themselves, or
us, linger too long over the magic they made in between. Now is
our chance.

1 Update
Well my friends.... it has happened...
Stephen was on JIM LADD and it seems he smoked it!!!

Bonnie Harris who listened in and sent to the site:
"Stephen Stills was on (was he ever!) Jim Ladd's Living Room last
night. He did "Bluebird", "For What It's Worth", a beautiful
Fred Neil song that I can't remember the name of
(NOT "Everybody's Talkin'") and "Seen Enough". He was solo acoustic.
Played great, sang great. He was very funny and personable.
Of course, Jim Ladd is
master at getting these guys to be at their best.
Beautifully engineered too. I really enjoyed it."

Some clarification from Gerry Tolman on Stephen's appearance on
Jim Ladd's show
He did the following songs:
"Stephen gave a great interview, from music to politics. It was
a high energy 1 hour show.
Played 4 songs acoustic; Bluebird, For What It's Worth, Seen Enough,
as well as
an awesome tribute to Fred Neil, Dolphin, which is a Fred Neil
song."
Thanks Gerry!!

Do you remember Rockline??
Hosted once again by Bob Coburn,
it's a live Q&A radio show that is still going strong
after 20+ years.
Fans can call in or email in their questions for the acts.
CSN and Neil have done some memorable appearances on
Rockline over the years.
Well guess what??
This Wednesday 08/01/01
Stephen and David will be on ROCKLINE.
It has moved around so much over the years from different stations.
Go here to find out what station it's on in your area.

STOP! HEY, WHAT'S THAT SOUND?

It's been 27 years and five
months since a Buffalo Springfield album has appeared on the Billboard
album chart. Their "Box Set" (Atco/Elektra/Rhino) debuts at No.
194 on The
Billboard 200 this week, giving the seminal group a well-deserved
chart
placing.
The Rhino box is the sixth chart album for the precursor band
to Crosby,
Stills, Nash & Young and Poco. Here is how the six albums have
ranked:
"Buffalo Springfield," No. 80 (1967)
"Buffalo Springfield Again," No. 44 (1967)
"Last Time Around," No. 42 (1968)
"Retrospective/The Best of Buffalo Springfield," No. 42 (1969)
"Buffalo Springfield," No. 104 (1973)
"Box Set," No. 194 to date (2001)
The Rhino set also debuts on Billboard's Top Internet Album Sales
chart at a lofty No. 6.

Weird item for the day
So Im waiting for Rockline to hit the airwaves last night and
Ramiro and I are watching
the festivities of the much ballyhooed MTV 20th Anniversary celebration
@
the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC.
Best moment, Kid Rock and Billy Gibbons jamming on an imprompteau
slow blues.
They also paraded alot of the old VJs out for the event.
When what to our amazement, we get some STILLS content...
be it weird anyway...
Former MTV VJ KENNEDY when remembering Woodstock 94 Kennedy
said something to the affect of:
I was so excited I got Stephen Stills face tattooed on my heine.

08/02/01 update
So another Rockline under their belts eh...!
They sounded good and in gear for the tour.
Bob Coburn started the evening with Stephen. They discussed
the glorious Buffalo Springfield Boxed set and fielded some calls.
Stephen was in good form.
The BIG NEWS item from it all was Stephen discussing the fact that
he has 1 more song to write to go towards his solo project.
Friends I believe we are truly going to see a Stills solo record
next year. Can't be soon enough for me!
BEAUTY
David came on during the later portion of the show with James Raymond.
James was in studio and David was calling in.
They also fielded some calls and played some Cpr tunes on the air waves.
David confirmed the band for the CSN tour

Young & Stills Say Buffalo Springfield 'Box Set' Brought Them
Back Together
(7/22/01, 10 a.m. ET) -- Neil Young and Stephen Stills have had
their disagreements over the
years, whether it's been in Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills,
Nash & Young, or the short-lived
Stills-Young Band. However, the two are in total agreement about
the effect putting together the
new Buffalo Springfield Box Set had on them. In fact, both men
say that the project--which Young helmed, but
also involved the other members of the band--helped enhance their
nearly 40-year relationship, and both have
par
Young recalls, "He came up to the ranch and we played it. We had
to stop after the first half and take a little while
off, a couple of days or something, and then come back and listen
to the rest of it, 'cause it was four CDs and it
was a real experience for us listening to ourselves grow and reach
a certain point and then listening to the group
kind of disintegrate and fall away from itself, so it was a learning
experience."
Stills concurs, adding that Box Set opened the door for Young
to rejoin Stills, David Crosby, and Graham Nash for
the Looking For
listened to...We couldn't listen to the whole thing at once. It
was, like, too emotionally overwhelming 'cause it's
sort of like revisiting your childhood, only a smellaphonic dream,
you know? And, and we just...we laughed and cried and it brought
us back together spiritually. It was really, really quite something."
Stills is currently preparing for a CSN tour that kicks off August
13 at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston,
Michigan. He has told LAUNCH that he expects another CSNY tour
to take place in the next couple of years as well.

Among the 6 listed is BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD - Rhino / Elektra
Stop, hey what's that sound? The semi-supergroup that arguably
invented country rock released only
2 albums with it's original 1966-68 lineup. So how and why this
lengthy four-CD set? Withnearly half its 88 tracks of experimental
pop-twang
devoted to demos, outtakes and remixes, this collection opens
a wide door onto Stephen Stills,
Neil Young and Richie Furay's ingenuous songwriting and warm fuzzy
harmonies.

In the Real Gone Section (obits)
There are some Crosby and Stills quotes on FRED NEIL
"Freddie taught me alot, says David Crosby, speaking exclusively
to MOJO on the death of Fred Neil. He was an
amazing folk singer, probably had one of the best voices any of
us ever had. He was quite self-destructive and very good
at isolating himself. He has hidden out in the Keys for the last
10 years without anybody being able to find him.
No one, not even close friends could find him. But oh man, could
he sing." - DAVID CROSBY
"Everything I learned about guitar," said Stephen Stills, "I learned
from Fred Neil."
"He was an amazingly talented guy," says Crosby, "who just didn't
fit in this commercial world at all."

Here are the goodies from the SEPTEMBER 2001 Issue of MOJO
There is a ad for a record from the Cosmic Rough Riders called
"Enjoy the Sunshine"
And they describe the music as "Think the Byrds, Flying Burrito
Brothers, and Buffalo Springfield put through
Teenage Fanclub's blender and you'll be close to how they sound."

The next number of entries comes
from the October issue of MOJO Magazine

"I was saddened to hear the death of Fred Neil (Real Gone MOJO 94). Thirty years has passed

MOJO article highlighted the release
of Many Sides of Fred Neil. Hard to believe the sublime December's Dream was previously unreleased.
I wrote to him last spring, and was pleasantly surprised to receive
a hand-written reply. Fred talked to recently

Is an article on JIM IRSAY (the owner of the Indianapolis Colts)
by Martin Schoeller entitled:
The Many Passions of Jim Irsay
The pertinence of this is that there is STILLS content here.
"Rock and roll is a driving force in Irsay's life.
This is a man who dates even personal history in reference to musical tragedies."
The author wanted to interview Irsay about his recent purchase of the original
On The Road manuscript by Jack Kerouac.
Irsay's publicist got back to Schoellar and told him,
"Jim wants to play you some new songs that he's been working on.
He has one of Stephen Stills old guitars and he is bringing it to the office."
EXCERPT:
"As a kid, Jim was schooled in music by an old black man from Chicago's South Side, whom he calls 'a house man,' and who took
Jim on drives and told him about Muddy Waters and the blues. Jim later added John Lennon, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan to his personal
pantheon and has since built himself a shadow life, wherein he hangs out with pop heroes lile Cameron Crowe and Hunter S. Thompson and jams
with rock stars like Mike Mills of R.E.M. and Stephen Stills. Irsay sometimes plays his own tunes at charity concerts or ducks into a
studio to put down some tracks. A few years ago, he wrote and recorded a song, along with Mills and Stills, for Ryan White;
the boy who came to symbolize the tragedy of AIDS..."

Upon reading about Classic Records in Mojo magazine, I asked Gerry Tolman
if this was legit, and he said indeed it was.
"They sound great. I was there with Bernie Grundman for the mastering of the

Grundman gave all of these discs his ultra touch.
They are all meticulously re-mastered for vinyl."-Gerry Tolman
Thanks for the good word on the vinyl Gerry - time to go shopping!

I am a man of constant sorrow
I've seen trouble all my days
I'll say goodbye to Colorado
Where I was born and partly raised.
Your mother says I'm a stranger
My face you'll never see no more
But there's one promise, darling:
I'll see you on God's golden shore.
Through this open world I'm about to ramble
Through ice and snows, sleet and rain
I'm about to ride that morning railroad
Perhaps I'll die on that train.
I'm going back to Colorado
The place that I started from
If I had known how bad you'd treat me honey
I never would have come.
