In this issue of Pollstar Magazine, Stephen Stills is listed under the "Exclusive Agency Signing's". He signed as
a solo act with ICM (International Creative Management).
Here's hoping this is a "sign" ;-0 that Stephen is perhaps about
to embark on some solo dates! Whether they be corporate dates,
one-offs, casino gigs or a mini solo tour. This is good news.

Between the Lines
The Inside Scoop on the Book World
by Matthew Flamm
Genius Memoirs? They have an album and a tour. Now all Crosby,
Stills, Nash and Young need to make their comeback complete are
a few book deals. According to his agent, David Vigliano, Stephen
Stills is mulling over offers for his autobiography, For What
It's Worth. Not to be outdone, David Crosby began circulating
a proposal, Since Then, a sequel to his 1988 memoir, Long Time
Gone. But following a recent New York Post gossip item about the
band member's competing projects, Crosby's agent, Al Lowman, decided
to "withdraw the book until the playing field is clear." According
to sources, Graham Nash's proposed biography has been tabled for
the same reason. Still to be heard from: Neil Young, whom publishing
insiders doubt will ever produce a book, despite a contract he's
had with Villard for years. "It's not currently scheduled" was
all Random House spokesman Tom Perry would say....

Stephen Stills appears in the JUNE issue of GUITAR PLAYER Magazine
The article is called:

"Playing fast is not necessarily best, Stephen Stills told GP
readers in the Jan '76 issue. "It's what you play when. Basically,
I'm a blues cat, and one well-placed blues lick can just rip your
heart out. That's the theory I work on."
As a key member of Buffalo Springfield, Stills proved the validity
of his theory by adding super-sustained, creamy, fuzzed-out solos
to several of the band's tunes, including "Questions," "Uno Mundo,"
and the majestic "Special Care," - which inspired this month's
snapshot. (These three songs appear on Last Time Around, an album
that perfectly captures the restless energy of American rock in
1968.)
To emulate Stills' fat, soaring tone, roll off the highs on your
neck pickup, and use an overdrive pedal to stun your amp's preamp
section. Make the slide from C to F (bar1) controlled and even.
In a mere eighth-note, you want to pass through a total of eight
pitches with a sense that you've heard them all.

"There's an extremely long interview with Cameron Crowe
in today's UK Newspaper THE GUARDIAN - Friday October 20th, 2000
in which he talks about his movie "Almost Famous" and his years
as a
Rolling Stone journalist."
Here is the final quote from the piece:
"The main effect of my Rolling Stone career was that I felt like
I had a
place in the world. I could write about this thing that I loved
so much;
and as rough as it was, and caught in the middle as I was, I guess
it was
my persona back then.
I ran into STEPHEN STILLS at a football game a year
and a half ago, and he introduced me to his wife. Here's how he
introduced me.
"This is Cameron. He was a fan who always got caught in the middle
between wanting to be friends with us, and wanting to please Rolling
Stone, who didn't like us as much as he did."
I thought: wow, what happened to the power and mystery of journalism
and writing?
That was the role I played:
the fan who had several masters to serve - one of which was...
me "

CALVIN "FUZZY" SAMUELS

Born in Caribbean, on the island of Antigua, Calvin grew up in London, England.
He taught himself to play piano, ukelele and acoustic guitar,
later switching to bass.
He began traveling in England and Europe with various soul and
R&B bands. He
started writing and recording with Eddy "Electric Avenue" Grant, then of the English group, The Equals;while also playing with
guitarist Junior Marvin of
Bob Marley & The Wailers, where he got the nickname 'Fuzz' by playing his bass through a fuzz box.
He formed the first all-black power trio in England, The
Sundae Times, scoring a top ten hit in Israel with a song called "Abba Abba",
written and produced by Eddy Grant for the album, "Us Colored Kids."
The band included singer/guitarist, Dell Richardson and drummer Conrad Isadore.
This led to the making of Stephen Stills' first two solo albums
STEPHEN STILLS and STEPHEN STILLS 2
which included superstars Jimi Hendrix, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, The
Memphis Horns, Mama Cass, and Rita Coolidge,
During this time he worked and lived with P.P. Arnold for six years,
performing under the name Axis. While working with
Stills a big break came, getting him a position with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
With CSNY he toured the United States, recored their legendary live
album, Four Way Street, and also performed on their classic single, "Ohio."
Working sessions between London and Los Angeles, he became part
of
Stephen Stills band, "Manassas," with
Chris Hillman, Dallas Taylor, Joe Lala, Paul Harris and Al Perkins,
cutting
the epic 1st double album entitled "Manassas," and the follow up lp, "Down the Road."
"Manassas" toured for three years, in the US and abroad, to rave reviews
for their
diverse mix of music, they covered the gamut
from blues, to bluegrass, folk, rock and a sprinkling of country.
They were hugely innovative at the time.
In the later 70's he also performed with the group America and appeared with Neil Young
in his concert movie "Rust Never Sleeps."
In the 80's he wrote and recorded songs with Marianne Faithful along with Steve Winwood.
Later he joined the Alvin Lee Band along with Mick Taylor touring for over six
years. For Taj Mahal, he worked on the Broadway musical, "Mule Bone" written by Langston Hughes and Zora Lee Hurston, with music composed by Taj starring blues man Kenny Neal.
In the early 90s he teamed up with Bobby Keys, Mick Taylor, Nicky Hopkins and Ivan
Neville as "Tumbling Dice".
Now he is performing solo on the Bouzouki a World Beat blend of
Blues, Reggae, Calypso, Classic Rock and African folk songs.
FUZZY has a new album recorded at his home studio.

Another Stills stop on CAMPAIGN 2000....
November 1st, 2000 in The Miami Herald:
"As the presidential race enters its final days, the focus in
Florida has shifted from issues to voter turnout, with both campaigns
bringing their big guns to the state to urge supporters to go
to the polls.
Vice President Al Gore campaigned today from the swing-voting Orlando area to Tampa,
a place that has voted as Florida has in every presidential election
since 1964. Gore will appear there with Florida-based entertainer
Jimmy Buffett, and Lieberman will be in Daytona Beach with Stephen Stills."

October 31st, 2000
Stephen Stills performed at a rally at the University of Minnesota's
Cowles Auditorium.
It featured Gloria Steinem & Stephen Stills.
This rally's emphasis was to point out the differences
between Gore and Bush on the abortion issue.
Al Gore is an abortion-rights supporter.
Bush is an abortion opponent.

Stephen Stills-Philadelphia, PA
2/17/74-Academy Of Music
Stephen Stills performed at the Philadelphia Academy of Music.
Yes, it
was true, Stills playing in the house of Eugene Ormandy and the
Philadelphia Orchestra. A place made specifically for the enjoyment
of
music. The opportunity to hear Stephen in a great setting. He
did not
disappoint.
Love The One You're With opened the show with Stills backed by a band
that included Joe Lala, percussion, Jerry Aiello, keyboards, Russ
Kunkel,
drums, Kenny Passerelli, bass, and Donnie Dacus, guitar. Wooden Ships,
Pretty Girl Why, My Favorite Changes, Jet Set/Rocky Mountain Way, and a
rousing Special Care were played in an opening electric set.
Stephen came out alone after a brief intermission for an acoustic
set of
Change Partners, Know You Got To Run, Crossroads/Can't Catch Me, the Beatles
Blackbird, Everybody's Talking, 4+20, and Word Game.
The show continued after band introductions with Four Days Gone, We Are
Not Helpless/America's Children, New Mama, Bluebird and
49 Bye Byes/For What It's Worth.
The version of My Favorite Changes, Stephen played here and then on the
CSNY 1974 Summer tour was more up-tempo then the final studio
cut that
appears on Stills 1975. I liked this version a little better then
the
studio. Other hi-lites of the show for me were
Wooden Ships, Pretty Girl Why, Special Care, and Bluebird.
I saw Mr. Ormandy stage left near the end of the show and he had
a huge
smile on his face.

Quote from Steven Fromholz site:
"I hooked up with Stephen Stills on his first solo tour in the
summer of 1971 and traveled all over
the world with a bunch of rock and roll crazies...
Since that time I've continued to play music and write
songs."...

Steven Fromholz Today
Craig Hillis Talks About Fromholz
A Fromholz fan, friend and sideman.
During the winter of 1970-71, I was a regular visitor at the Fromholz-Lake
homestead in the
Rockies high above Boulder. Gold Hill was a rustic community of
artists, university types and
pine-huggers with no stores, no paved roads or other related commercial
blemishes. It was a
bohemian heaven tailor made for an aspiring songwriter from Kopperl,
and a picker's paradise
for an energized rock and roll sprout from UT. Our wooden guitars
came alive in the high, dry
air and Steven's big baritone filled up every corner of Janey's
front room. The isolated
mountain environment, the warmth of Steve and Janey's hospitality
and the cozy song sessions
around the pot-bellied stove linger as magic moments in my musical
upbringing. I learned a
great deal about songs and how they came to be and, thanks to
Steven's patience, I developed
some guitar skills that, in a very small way, contributed to his
inexhaustible store of original
works.

from the Crosby, Stills and Nash Bio
by Dave Zimmer ©
"Also in Colorado, I met some real down-home people
who had no particular illusions about who I was. To them, I
was just Stephen. I liked that. It helped me sort out a few
things and brought me back to an understanding
that there's more to life than just rock and roll.
I began to paint; I was a Rocky Mountain rescue

Song for Stephen Stills
by Steven Fromholz © 1969
As it appears on the FRUMMOX record
The crystal gay softness unbroken by sunlight,
And rainbows have died for the day.
A pine needle pillow of dreamed-upon memories,
Walked over winds blown away.
Time doesn't enter my singular solitude,
Mysteries of night thoughts come begging to me,
Where lonely well-meaning is only allowable,
Thoughts of my past bring my present to me.
I laugh at my lyrics while singing to nightbirds,
The words only mess up the tune.
And count all the stars 'til I run out of numbers,
And find that I'm sleeping too soon.
Night is for laughing or walking a quiet path,
Lying in clover on top of a hill.
I lay here dreaming of sailing on silver wings
Morning comes dancing and I'm dreaming still.
(Chorus #1)
And I'm off on a high country caravan, gone again,
Following the ones who went before;
Don't think that I'm going back again,
I couldn't stand the games of man,
I just won't play at all no more.
I sit in the sunrise and search for the morningstar,
Fighting the sun to be seen.
Standing in springtime and watching the trees working,
Changing the dead leaves to green.
(Chorus#1)
Daylight it decorates all that it falls upon,
Everything 'round me it feels like my own.
Walking a straight path from here over yonder way.
Me feeling happy, for once all alone.
(Chorus#2)
And I'm off on a high country caravan,
Where I've been is all a sin I'd just as soon forget;
Can't see no reason to look behind,
I might find some of the kind I've seen before,
We've already met.
Out across the valley on through the creek bed.
My footprints are seen by the dove.
And he flies on by me and calls his love mate,
The smile fits my face like a glove.
Down in the gulleys the going get rougher now,
Turn loose my footsteps I go where they will.
If you pass this way you might possibly find me here,
Staring at God from the top of a hill.
