POP
Originally reviewed for week ending 12/5/70
Singer-songwriter-guitarist Steve Stills is one of the most complex
talents in
rock today, bursting with soul and depth and a genius for absorbing
influences
and surpassing them through his own powerful creativity. A solo
step away
from CSN&Y, Stills draws a crowd of all-stars (Booker T. Jones,
Eric Clapton,
Jimi Hendrix), and via brilliant arrangements, takes rock to new
and musical
heights on "Love the One You're With," "Go Back Home" and "Cherokee."

Billboard's advance test pressing didn't include the information
of exactly
which tracks Crosby & Nash sat in on. But they're present all
right. And Stills'
Columbia debut sounds quite like the best of C-S-N-&-Y as well
as like the best of
Stills' previous solo LPs. That certainly ain't bad. In fact,
it's like having
C,S,N&Y back in full flower. Best cuts: "Turn Back The Pages,"

POP
Originally reviewed for week ending 12/13/75
Although this album was recorded more than 20 months ago, it is
still a very
good indication of Stills in concert. The band consists of guitarist
Donnie
Dacus, percussionist Joe Lala, keyboardist Jerry Aiello, drummer
Russ Kunkel
and bassist Kenny Passarelli, and they are only featured on one
side entitled the
"Electric Side." The other side is the "Acoustic Side" and it
showcases the great
acoustic picking of Stills. As for the material, it runs the gamut
of his long and
glorious career from his early folk days to his Buffalo Springfield
work to his
own Mannassas, and even has one song penned by Joe Walsh. The
performance
is especially good on several and the Stills magic is evident
throughout. Best
cuts: "Wooden Ships," "Four Days Gone," "Special Care," "Change
Partners,"
"Everybody's Talking At Me," "4 plus 20." Dealers: Just let people

Typically laid back Stills with usual better than average songs
and instrumental
work from Donnie Dacus, George Perry, Joe Vitale, Tubby Ziegler
and several
others. Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman (Flo & Eddie) join in on
vocals. For
Stills fans, LP is exactly what they will expect. The only criticism
might be that
the artist doesn't really seem to get above a fixed energy level
until near the end
of side two, when he swings into a Latin-flavored cut and several
easy rockers.
Stills is strong on the more uptempo cuts and should do more.
Best cuts:
"Midnight In Paris," "Stateline Blues," "No Me Nieges," "Ring

"Circlin'." Dealers: Stills a consistently major artist.

Despite its claim as a "best of" collection, Stills' most powerful

Stills emerges from a two-year hiatus (excepting a "best of ..."
reprise) with a
vital, energetic 10-cut effort which subtly combines a disco beat
and his rock
guitar on some uptempo numbers. ("You Can't Dance Alone," "We
Will Go
On"). But the showpieces remain, as always, Stills' evocative
lyrics and vocal
style, shown best on "Thoroughfare Gap," "Beaucoup Yumbo" and
"Can't Get
No Booty." Surprise cuts are the best to date of Greg Allman's
"Midnite Rider"
and the eternal "Not Fade Away." Backing Stills' usual guitar,
bass, drum,
synthesizer lineup are horns and strings on the discotized cuts.

The early '80s rebound of Crosby, Stills & Nash is mirrored in
this new Stills
solo work, which hews closer to the trio's own records than the
guitarist,
songwriter and singer's uneven '70s outings. Graham Nash, Mike
Finnigan,
Jimmy Page and other rock veterans are on hand to back Stills'
most consistent
yet varied performances in some time, which should enhance its
potential for
softer rock and pop fans.
