Stephen Stills Plays at Garden
In His First Solo Concert Here

The New York Times

August 1st, 1970

Stephen Stills, noted for his work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, gave his first “solo” performance here Friday evening before 21,000 people at Madison Square Garden.

The evening was divided into three sections. First, Mr. Stills played electric guitar and was backed by a rock quartet on such songs as the old Springfield tune “Rock and Roll Woman.” Second, there was an acoustic set beginning with Mr Stills, actually appearing solo, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, but later joined by people such as Graham Nash and Fred Neil. The group played Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s “Love the One You’re With,” Mr Neil’s “The Dolphin,” and others.

Note:
(The author, Mike Jahn erroneously stated that “Love the One You’re With” was a CSNY song. Correction, it is a “Stephen Stills solo effort song, which has been played over the years with CSN, CSNY and Stills solo.)
LORRAINE

The segment saw Mr Stills backed by an 11 piece band, largely the Memphis Horns. For this the group played “Ecology Song” and “Bluebird Revisited,” among others. The level seemed to decline sharply during the last segment. Mr Stills basically frail folk voice simply can’t hold up under the glare of so much instrumentation. His “Bluebird Revisited,” a remake of the old Springfield song “Bluebird” is so thoughtless, it should be referred to the Audobon Society.

However for atleast two thirds of the evening, Mr Stills gave an outstanding performance, far superior to the life-less nature of his recent recording. The concert was one of the best yet to be seen at the Garden. A high point was a stunning closed circuit large screen color TV projection of the concert by Joshua Television, which ran the light shows at the Fillmore East.
