Lorraine’s notes from Tour 2003 AJ Palumbo Center Pittsburgh, PA 04/12/03 Here are the notes from my last minute road trip with my buds al and camille. OMG Good response (crowd) End of Carry On SS did not go to chorus - DC caught him and they played another stanza. Loud voices, loud sound, from my vantage point. Not bad for a gym. Bass player in bowling shirt - b/w Where is gerald? Finnigan, Vitale and Santos are clearly separated from the boyz - in the stage layout. SS Print top flowers Stage set up, 2 persian rugs for David and Graham to stand on, and Stephen, ever the alternative one! ; 0 has a piece of linoleum, in order for SS to "spin." S N C Stage order 02. Wild Tales DC Looks thin. He looks good. Wild Tales Rocks. Bass was not loud enough, lower in the mix. 03. Marrakesh Express SS late w/ lick 04. Leeshore David dressed in a black western shirt, with embroidery. GN in white tee and button down sweater on top w/ blk jeans. 05. Deja Vu David needs to get a belt. He often pulls at his pants. See he is losing weight! Crowd pretty attentive and sitting. 06. Military Madness SS plays Neil-ism jam during the middle of the song, like csny did during csny 2k2. DC & GN chant no more war. Ask crowd to join in. Medium response. Then good overall response at end. 07. Wasted on the Way 08. Wounded World New Stephen Stills and Graham Nash collaboration A medium burn - blues/rock number EXCELLENT!!!!!! KILLER SONG - W O W! SS - Finns- Vitale and GN sing the chorus. Very powerful - a stills classic. I want to hear it again! Put it out and keep playing it this tour!!!!! Go Stephen! 09. Dirty Little Secret Graham took off his sweater and now I can see that the white tee is in fact a farm aid shirt. 10. ACMH SS shining here. Good crowd reaction. SS Frenzy. 1st real big crowd reaction all nite so far. 11. Southern Cross BREAK 2nd Set 01. Helplessly Hoping (Please bring back You Don’t Have to Cry in this spot. Or and idea - alternate with HH or how about CP?) 02. CM >> Cathedral SS comes out the 2nd set wearing the new hand crafted lovely shirt that Jeanne Heacox had sewn for him. Looks great! In My Dreams SS no vocal here. I wish he sang this w/ C & N. BUT this SMOKED!!! WOW Kicks ass, SS on semi-acoustic Gibson. Just excellent. Another high point in the show for me. David had the guitar lick down. . 2 killers 2 nite so far for me was Wounded World and In My Dreams. 04. Feed The People Killer refrain SS DC GN This is now a rehearsed piece and smooth. 05. Lost Another One 06. Old Man Trouble This is the 1st time that SS has really peeled away the layers and shown himself to us in a long long time. Raw and true. STUNNING. Best version of this song that I have seen or heard yet - period. Sings from the soul - LORD HAVE MERCY. Finns is so much more prominent here on keys than Booker T was during SS’ rendition during the CSNY 2k2 tour. TASTY. Standing O and Graham kissed SS afterward. WOW ! 07. Guinnevere DC Pissy b/c crowd was still hopped up over OMT. But GN & DC did good. Perhaps this is bad placement in the show for these 2 songs back to back, if the crowd can not calm down enough? 08. WHAT IS SLACK KEY: Hawaiian slack key guitar (ki ho'alu) is truly one of the great acoustic guitar traditions in the world. Ki ho'alu, which literally means "loosen the key," is the Hawaiian language name for the solo fingerpicked style unique to Hawai'i. In this tradition, the strings (or "keys") are "slacked" to produce many different tunings, which usually contain a major chord, or a chord with a major 7th note, or sometimes one with a 6th note in it. Each tuning produces a lingering sound behind the melody and has a characteristic resonance and fingering. Slack key guitar music is sweet and soulful, and it is said that slack key is drawn from the heart and soul out through the fingers of each player. There is a mystique surrounding slack key guitar music - it is very personal, and can be very magical in feeling. Slack key derives its unique sound from techniques such as "hammering-on" and "pulling-off." The melody at first listen reminded me of “Just Isn’t Like You,” from Stills Alone. Subtle Smooth LOVELY This song led into 11. SJBE Hearts Gate as a lead in to SJBE works great. During the guitar break Vitale stood by the side of the stage with Rance and watched SS. He never gets to watch the show from our vantage point. SS on a roll and the crowd eats it up. Solo got a Standing O. CSN Loves Pittsburgh. During the end of SJBE I can see Joe Ray Skrha on the other side of the venue beaming. 12. Darkstar SS trouble w/ vocals during song. SS makes up for it with a killer lead jam that saved the song -fiery. 13. Wooden Ships Transcending Salvation Powerful Nash now doing “born right here routine” to Vitale. THEN! SS intros DC and GN WOW That never happens.. said something like Graham I don’t know how you have put up with Croz and myself all these years.... 14. Woodstock Encores 15. My Country Tis of Thee 3 vocals on top of the Michael Hedges guitar tape 16. Teach AMEN
