NO NUKES at Madison Square Garden
This was my first CSN show as a group. I had seen Stephen Stills
three times already I wrote the essay below for my high school English class back in 1979. It received high praise and a grade A, from my very hip teacher, Ms Pinzak. Looking back... it sounds like something I could have written today...a sign of things to come... Just a few days ago I felt that the most important thing to happen to me, up to this point in my life, happened. It was the fifth and final night of the M.U.S.E. concerts (Musicians United for Safe Energy). It was exhilarating just being there. The performers had all gotten together for this cause to stop the nukes, (to stop nuclear power from killing us all.) Each artist's performance was electric. The 19,999 other people there with me were all experiencing this great event, but none were experiencing it exactly as I did. We had all gotten together for the cause. At a point in the show, Jackson Browne and James Taylor came out and started a sing-along of Jesse Colin Young's song "Let's Get Together." Everyone stood and sung along. The Garden vibrated with great enthusiasm, and eagerness. I felt that if a lot of concerned people put their minds together to voice their opinions they can reach their goal, whatever it may be. I especially went because I wanted to see and hear Crosby, Stills and Nash, who were supporting the cause. I listen to their music always. Who they are, what they do, and what they stand for; and of course what they sing are a part of my life. I had seen Stephen Stills perform at three previous concerts. All were excellent; but seeing Crosby, Stills and Nash all at the same time fulfilled my dream. The moment they came on stage they captured the attention and admiration of everyone during each song. As I look back on this it did turn out to be as important as I
thought it would be, maybe even more so for several reasons. The
enthusiasm of the crowd for the cause and for the music itself
as well as the spirit of friendship and cooperation among the
musicians showed me that it was possible for people to work together
for what they believe in. |
