GRAHAM NASH

Songs for Survivors Tour 2002

Graham Nash solo jaunt - NYC style
09/18/02

Nash townhall handbill
*handbill from show*
FIRST SET
Opened with
01. WILD TALES
Pevar on slide guitar
Nice overall sound
Good opener
The venue was not sold out.

02. MILITARY MADNESS

Pevar on guitar recreating the “recorded original guitar sound”
cool...
Then tried to give it the Neil Young 2k2 middle break to no success.
But a good version.

Order on stage
Dean Parks - James Raymond - Russ Kunkle - Larry Klein - Jeff Pevar
with GRAHAM fronting the band

The guys all wore uniform black for the NYC show.

03. MARRAKESH EXPRESS
This time Dean Parks took the reigns and recreated the original guitar sound for this song.
Very nice! Made the song fresh live.

04. I USED TO BE A KING

Very nice - full _F A T _ musical sound
Excellent crowd reaction. This bunch of musicians were organized,
vital and full of energy. All the musical readings were fresh.

05. LOST ANOTHER ONE

This band treatment was faster and more pop-ish sounding.

06. NOTHING IN THE WORLD

dedicated this one to Joel Bernstein.
Which to my ears really sounds like “Unequal Love”. But it was a beautiful rendition live.
Crowd though not full - was very attentive and quiet - a show made of pin dropping stuff.
A very tight but loose show - rehearsed. By the time of a NYC show on any acts itinerary,
you want to be in top form and this showed.

07a.CRITICAL MASS

Performed by Dean Parks on electric and Jeff Pevar on acoustic guitar -
sans any vocals or canned music. (CSN and CN have always played the record
version of CM as an intro for when they play the Wind on the Water, or
alternately when Graham plays CM as an intro for Cathedral.)
It was FANTASTIQUE! to hear this done LIVE. It had a very baroque - ish sound
delicate and delicious. GREAT JOB Peev and Parks.

07b. WIND ON THE WATER
Dean Parks takes most lead parts during the show. He is an excellent player,
and I find was a nice counterpoint to Jeff Pevar’s guitar playing.
Excellent choice of players to accompany Graham on this tour.

08. BARREL OF PAIN!!!!
When Russ Kunkel started the song - I thought to myself ... hmmm what
could this lead into and then when it kicked in - WOW this was the nights first shocker.
Rare gem these days. NICE! Though I missed the Finns part, Graham took back the rant and
made it just a small 2x’s run.

09. FIELD WORKER!!!!!!- WOW WOW WOW
Unbelieveable.

Kudos to Graham for having the “cajones” to dig into his bag of songs
and really plays some for the loyal - diehard fans. THANK YOU FOR THIS.
He told a Geffen story that was the inspiration for this song.
About going to an extravagent party that David Geffen had thrown, and after
leaving the party driving up the coast to where the food for the immigrant field
workers was stored and seeing that there was not any food there.
Quite a juxaposition of over indulgent wealth and poverty.
A very passionate reading of this song done @ Town Hall.
(Franz you would have loved it).

10. WASTED ON THE WAY
sigh - well, you gotta play the hits!

INTERMISSION

SECOND SET
Came back out after the break, by himself and played the next 2 alone.

01. RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES
Always great to hear this one.

02. HALF YOUR ANGELS
A mistake not having released this on SONGS FOR SURVIVORS

03. PAVANNE
Graham just sang this one, (he did not play an instrument) and Parks,
Raymond, and Pevar came out for this. Sheer beauty - it was religious.

04. CATHEDRAL
The full band came back for this one.

05. JUST A SONG

Peevs turn to play the Stills part for this song.

06. DIRTY LITTLE SECRET
Great song!! Classic Nash-though I liked the CSN reading of it during the
CSN 2001 tour better.
But a stunner none-the-less.

07. TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN

ok- this is the 3rd SHOCK for the evening. OMG (oh my god).
AMAZING to hear this rant. Gotta love it. WOW.

08. PREROAD DOWNS

This version ROCKED!
WOW it was another take at the recreation of the sound from the original recording.
VINTAGE TASTY! Get this - Dean Parks was doing the backwards guitar parts!~

09. IMMIGRATION MAN

Always loved this song.
Just noticed during this song that Graham’s guitar strap,
which was made of black leather, was tooled with his
initials G. N. , vertically. (I want one!)

END OF SHOW

ENCORE
01. OUR HOUSE
Dedicated this to Art Garfunkel and his wife for their anniversary.

02. TEACH

END.

MISC NOTES:

There was no merchandise being sold here. If they did not
think any promotional items would be cost effective, it would have been wise to
atleast sell the new CD - SONGS FOR SURVIVORS - no?

So far with 4 shows under their belts for this tour, they have played changing setlist,
with DIFFERENT gems strewn along the way. Excellent...

Spoted crew: John “Gonzo” Gonzales, Mouse, Rance.

The enchantment crew hung with Cathi and Steve preshow.
Also saw Mark and Doriann.
During the show spoke to an *elated* Cappy (Christopher)
who saw Nash the nite before @ Count Basie.

Made some new friends, who did not know that Graham has a new record out.
This needs to be ammended! Spread the word people.
Also saw George, fellow csny and js fan as well as Pete Fornatele.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Overall an outstanding performance in a very classic venue.
Dissappointing to know that the venue was not sold out - but not surprised.
There is never enough advertising. Point in reference is that there are plenty of CSNY
and related fans out there, that might not know that
Graham is touring, nor that he has a new record out.
At the show I found people, who still are reticent to get “Online,”
so there is even less of a chance of finding out about vital music.

Rock and roll has gone back underground - and in some respects I like this,
but in others it is detrimental to an artists career.
With the prevalence of what can been seen as the new underground “the internet”
where people who are passionate about anything, find a way to communicate with other
like minded individuals. It is a place where music afficionados go to gather and exchange
information, since we can not rely on conventional media these days.
Online is the lifeline for music these days...
*RANT OFF*

FINALLY:
May the Gods bestow blessings upon GRAHAM NASH and CO.
This show is a gift to everyone who gets to see it.

Relish it - taste it - smell it.

AMEN
