MOJO Collections Issue
(For vinyl junkies, rarity freaks, and cult connoisseurs)
Autumn 2001 is here.
It's a seasonal realease, other than the monthly issue's.

Inside is Crosby content!
a 5 page Article titled:
The Crosby Show

It's been a long strange trip for David Crosby with plenty of success (The Byrds, CSN)
and excess (drugs, liver transplant) along the way. He tells Mark Paytress about the famous
friends who kept him company through it all.

He discusses his musical friends including:

Fred Neil

Paul Kantner

Bob Dylan

Roger McGuinn

Hugh Masekela

Jerry Garcia

Joni Mitchell

et al....

Excerpt:

PAUL KANTNER:

Sci-fi loving Jefferson Airplane man
"Kantner is a truly unusual human being. He's an extremely bright
man, very opinionated and great fun. He and I spent a great deal of time
together, and to this day he's one of my favorite people because he's
never compromised. He doesn't give a shit about making money. He loves to
make music and he loves to stir up trouble.

We share a love of science fiction, which is why we did things like
'Have You Seen the Stars Tonight? and 'Wooden Ships.' We wrote
that right after I got tossed out of the Byrds. It's still one of my
favorite pieces of writing. We both felt it was mankinds destiny
to grow up, stop beating each other over the head with sticks and go
out in the stars and find our destiny. We're both iconoclasts, both very
anti-establishment."

"Produced in conjunction with The Guacamole Fund, the fourth
annual Valley Music Festival in Solvang, Calif., raised more than
$50,000 for local art and music classes. At the October 1-2 concerts
at the Solvang Festival Theater are (L-R) co-producer Jan Crosby with
her performing hubby, David Crosby, and Clint Black."

Upon reading about Classic Records in Mojo magazine, I asked Gerry Tolman
if this was legit, and he said indeed it was.

"They sound great. I was there with Bernie Grundman for the mastering of the
Stills and Manassas discs.
Grundman gave all of these discs his ultra touch.
They are all meticulously re-mastered for vinyl."-Gerry Tolman

Thanks for the good word on the vinyl Gerry - time to go shopping!

Crosby in print
There are a number of recent Crosby reviews and interviews in the press.
September 2001 Issue of Mojo #94
Reviews the CPR show @ the London Jazz Cafe - by Sid Griffin
"Final night of the European tour sees the godfather of hippy play a tight two and half hour set of hits and new material."
Excerpt:
"Crosby's music is unique. Guitars tuned to open chords, relatively complex time changes, and off-beat vocal
harmonies driving along philosophical, introspective lyrics add up to an artist either loved or dismissed. Almost every song
tonight could be described as mysterious or melancholic and when Crosby's crystal clear, bell-like tenor sends the melody sky
high they work very well. Tracks from his immortal first solo album If I Could Only Remember My Name gets
particularly audible approval, which is deserved since both
Music is Love and the lyricless yet beautifully sung
Song With No Words sound staggering in their pristine vocal packaging. New material such as Morrison, the sad tale
of The Doors late singer, and the surprisingly rockin'
Katie Did are also delivered with more verve than on record."

Found in the September issue of the UK Magazine Record Collector
is a 2 page interview with Mr David Crosby.

Short Takes...Crosby gets CPR by Peter Doggett
Some points of note:
He is blunt about CPR's future: "This band is a labor of love,
but it's a Britney Spears world, man, and we're failing.
We can't sell any records and we lose money when we tour. If Neil calls and says let's do
another tour, then CPR will survive, because I'll keep subsiding it. If he doesn't , it'll die."

"CSNY's tour last year won ecstatic reviews - but not in Europe, where the millionaire quartet refused to venture".
'It's money,' Crosby claims. 'It costs too much to come over here. That's why Neil came with Crazy Horse instead of us.
Believe me, we were pissed; we wanted to come. I was very offended that he came with Crazy Horse instead of us.
But his manager, Elliot Roberts - who is also my manager - is very concerned with optimising the amount
of money he can make. And that means playing the US not here.'

RE: Looking Forward: 'I was disappointed. We didn't use all the best songs. Nash had at least
two others that were better than the ones on the record. I had
Climber which we made a really good track of.
And Neil had much better ones than
'Queen of Them All,' which should never have been on the record. It was a jerk-off.'

When asked about another CSNY reunion: 'I talked to Neil the night before last, and he says he's still keen'

David Crosby on STEPHEN STILLS: 'At what he does, no one can touch Stills.'

David Crosby on GRAHAM NASH: 'Nash is the best harmony singer on the planet -hands down nobody can touch him.'

David Crosby on NEIL YOUNG: 'Playing with Neil is very intense, and very exciting.
He leans forward into what's possible, all the time. He's powerful. He's got a lot of juice.'

David Crosby on THE RECORD BUSINESS: 'A whiskey company owned one quarter of the record business.
And they sold it to a French water company. What do you think the French water company executives know about songs?
I'll tell you. F*&%ing nothing. They wouldn't know a song if flew up their f*&%$ing nose and died.'

Tell us how you REALLY feel David!!!

The November 8th, 2001 Issue of Rolling Stone - RS#881
This is their 2nd annual car issue
Guess who we find inside the pages??
The ever present:
Mr David Crosby
Where artists are discusing their first cars:

Crosby: "It was a 1950 Ford two - door, column shift, twin pipes. It was gray-green, I think.
My parents gave it to me; I was sixteen. It gave me mobility and allowed me to get laid. I put glass packs on it.

Good noise - "Rrrowrrr!" The main thing you wanted to do with it was drive around, look cool, make a great noise,
and hopefully, convince girls to go riding with you so you could take them on back roads and try to kiss them.
My wife's laughing, asking, 'Did it work?' Yes!"

The ad reads:
The Smithsonian and the Library of Congress
together are preserving collections of music, songs, poems, and speeches
that have inspired artists, leaders, and communities for generations.

To save historical treasures like these, we must raise almost
1 million dollars for the most endangered recordings, and millions more for the remainder.

In the reissue's and compilations section of the Magazine called FILTER
They discuss The Byrds Preflyte
(Which is an import reissue of this collection of rare early alternate versions.)

MOJO says of the album "Preflyte captures the moment when America harnessed the energy
of the Beatles to it's own musical forms, and the sense of wonder, excitement and ambition
outstripping skill makes these "baby pictures" still relevant."

The magazine interviewed Croz briefly. Here is the chat:
By Sylvie Simmons:

Q: Feelings on the Preflyte reissue?
A: "It's kind of a sore subject with Roger (McGuinn), Christopher (Hillman) and myself because
Preflyte wasn't an album and it most assuredly isn't a Byrds album. It's as if someone took the first things
you scribbled in seventh grade after you had become a Pulitzer Prize author and put it out. Byrds albums
were carefully constructed things that we put alot of money and effort into.

Q: The Byrds have never sounded more Beatle-esque.
A: "We were totally smitten by the Beatles. How could you not be? They were so musical. We could
understand what they were doing - taking folk music changes, which is what we played, and putting them to a rock 'n' roll
backbeat, and it worked. We wanted to be like them. Then our chemistry took over and we found our own way of doing things and
became us."

Q: You were in Abbey Road studio as they recorded Sgt Pepper?
A: "I was, as near as I know, the first human being besides them and George Martin and the engineers to hear A Day In the Life.
I was high as a kite - so high I was hunting geese with a rake. They sat me down; they had huge speakers like coffins
with wheels on that they rolled up on either side of the stool. By the time it got the end of that piano chord, man my brains
were on the floor."

In the September Speakeasy column, (where they list recent cool and relevant quotes) our poster boy is
Mr David Crosby:
QUOTE: "
MOJO's the only real decent music magazine left in the whole damn world. And I mean that."
That is a profound plug eh! Another reason to look for this great magazine- LK

In the Real Gone Section (obits)
There are some Crosby and Stills quotes on FRED NEIL
"Freddie taught me alot, says David Crosby, speaking exclusively to MOJO on the death of Fred Neil. He was an
amazing folk singer, probably had one of the best voices any of us ever had. He was quite self-destructive and very good
at isolating himself. He has hidden out in the Keys for the last 10 years without anybody being able to find him.
No one, not even close friends could find him. But oh man, could he sing." - DAVID CROSBY

"Everything I learned about guitar," said Stephen Stills, "I learned from Fred Neil."

"He was an amazingly talented guy," says Crosby, "who just didn't fit in this commercial world at all."
