03/22/99 Chris Stills @

NYC with Victoria Williams
by Lorraine Kaczorowski
Best way I can describe the twelve song set Sunday nite @ Tramps
in NYC, was that Chris sang and played his heart out. He sat on
a wooden chair surrounded by a few acoustic guitars, including
his "sea foam green" Gibson; dressed in brown velvet pants, brown
suede shoes and an off-white poet's shirt.
Chris ripped into his set with "100 Year Thing". "Stills-isms"
abounded throughout his performance. What are Stills-isms you
may ask? They are tasty embellishments interspersed throughout
the songs with those signature guitar runs, not unlike those of
his dad.
After seeing Chris perform numerous times, I have observed that
he is getting more and more comfortable on stage and he has a
strong stage presence. Chris was deeply focused on his craft and
was appreciative of the attentive crowd.
He covered the following songs: a superb version of David Crosby's
"Homeward Through The Haze" on piano with great vocals and fantastic
phrasing, and Stephen Stills/Manassas' "Rock n Roll Crazies" on
acoustic guitar. As a friend mentioned to me during the show...
"what no Cuban Bluegrass!!???"
Maybe we'll get a taste of that, further down the road....
