Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young from Los Angeles played here for
the first time this weekend with two nights of their unusual brand
of polished folk rock.
The group appeared at the Fillmore East Friday and again last
night. They are a collection of well known musicians who banded
together last year. David Crosby, formerly of the Byrds, Steve
Stills of the now-defunct Buffalo Springfield, and Graham Nash
from the Hollies, a British group. Neil Young, another ex-Buffalo
Springfield joined them a few months ago. They play both acoustic
and electric guitars, and Mr Stills and Mr Young switch to piano
occasionally during their concerts. This weekend they were accompanied
by Dallas Taylor on drums and Greg Reeves on bass.
A Slick Folk Sound
The group has a slick folk sound of exquisitely wrought vocal
harmonies by the four leaders. They sing mostly their own material,
bolstering their pretty voices with occasionally brilliant flashes
of hard, loud rock.
The groups music is entertaining and enjoyable. A problem is
that its almost too pretty and too lacking in basic enthusiasm,
in this sense their explorations into hard rock help greatly.
During their first set Friday the best moment was when Mr Stills
and Mr Young traded guitar licks back and forth during an extended
instrumental in the country song Down by the River.
