CSN&Y NOT?

Something must have clicked (or perhaps it was the ringing of box office cash registers) during the CSNY2000 tour because the group is doing it again next year.

The Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Tour of America kicks off February 6th at the Palace of Auburn Hills outside Detroit. The Clear Channel-promoted tour takes the group to arenas in 35 cities, wrapping in April.

Tickets start becoming available December 1st and on-sale dates for various cities will run through January. There are three price levels, $39.50, $55 and $85. A limited number of even higher-priced gold circle seats will also be offered.

Tour Report: CSNY

Last time around, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young took twenty-six years
between tours. So it's a pleasant surprise that the group has planned a
thirty-five-city North American arena tour-scheduled to begin on Feb 6th
outside Detroit - on the heels of 2000's highly successful outing.

Graham Nash predicted last year that the group would be touring more
consistently, but this one surprised even him. "We knew we were going to go
out again after the last tour was so successful," Nash says. "Then Neil
called and said, 'Are you ready to play again?' and I said, 'Sure, when are
we going out? August? He said, 'No - let's go out now.'"

Stephen Stills, who is also eager to get out on the road, says the recent
terrorist attacks and subsequent mobilization of the country acted as a spur.
"The feeling was that there was some healing to be done, and I kind of
agree," he says. Adds Nash, "I think people need comfort; they need to be
distracted from CNN."

Not surprisingly, the forty-date 2000 tour - which generated some of the best
reviews in CSNY's career - was an extraordinary financial hit, grossing an
estimated 43 million. Nash and Stills are the first to admit that the
economics or rock and touring have changed dramatically since the group's
early days, when rock impresario Bill Graham had to slip $100 bills under the
door of the Fillmore East dressing room to entice them out for an encore.
"It's gonna cost $500 now," says Nash with a laugh. Adds rueful-sounding
Stills, "You gotta understand: That was Bill Graham - he took the cash
back."

They'll be breaking in a new band: keyboardist Booker T Jones,
bassist Duck Dunn and drummer Smokey Potts. "We still feel like we've got
the music under our fingers," says Nash. "Last time I was just amazed at how
easily we became whatever the hell CSNY is. In the first day of rehearsals, I
knew it was a home run."

It was also apparent that something else was still the same; the competition
between Stills and Neil Young that created both exceptional music and
temperamental clashes in the Sixties and Seventies. "Neil and I still have
the original dynamic that we discovered in each other back when the cosmos
were closer together," Stills says. "We've still got that spark, and we still
ignite it in each other. The first time we got together again and played
'Cinnamon Girl,' I knew that we were there. The trick is to count it off at
the same tempo every night," he adds with a laugh, "and about once a week
Neil would count it off and it would not be the same - things like that just
keep it fun."

On the last tour, CSNY highlighted songs from their reunion album, Looking
Forward. This time, with no plans to record, they'll mix old CSNY songs with
new tunes from their solo repertories. "We've got a great band and a choice
of over 900 songs between us," says Nash. "We want a couple of brand new
songs from each guy."

"And wait till you see David in gold lame," cracks Stills, who then turns
serious. "What we do is very simple, very organic. We don't have firecrackers
and smoke bombs. It sounds trite, but the best way to explain it is: guitars
and amps and really good microphones - "

"And," chimes in Nash, "you've gotta add to that, great songs and great
voices, and you're off and running."

"And a couple of quickie bones!" Stills concludes with a giggle.
