HEY, WHAT'S THAT SOUND?

NEW BOXED SET
EXPECTED TO FLY JULY 17th, 2001
88-track, 4-CD Package Unleashes Stampede of Previously Unreleased
Music
There's something happening here as Atco/Elektra/Rhino readies the release
of BOX SET, the first and only comprehensive career retrospective
for
seminal '60s band Buffalo Springfield. The 4-CD package contains 88 tracks,
including familiar recordings as well as 36 demos, remixes, and
other
previously unreleased material, all spanning Buffalo Springfield's
brief
but intensely creative existence between 1966 and 1968.
The collection includes historical essays by Pete Long and Ken Viola,
supplemented by rare photos and memorabilia, vintage newspaper
and magazine
clippings, a complete discography, and a listing of the band's
concert
appearances. Produced by the group members themselves, BOX SET
is due in
stores July 17th, 2001
Discs one through three are sequenced chronologically, from the
band's
earliest demos to their demise; more than half of these tracks
have never
been available commercially. Disc four features newly remastered
versions
of Buffalo Springfield's first two albums in their entirety --
Buffalo
Springfield (mono) and Buffalo Springfield Again (stereo). All
of the great
Buffalo Springfield songs are included in their final commercial
mix (and
often in fascinating early demo or remixed versions), such as
the Top 10
hit "For What It's Worth," "Mr. Soul," "Sit Down I Think I Love
You," "Do I
Have To Come Right Out And Say It," "Bluebird," "Broken Arrow,"
"Uno
Mundo," "Kind Woman," and many more.
Said Joel Bernstein, production coordinator and researcher for the box,
"Work on this project actually began ten years ago. The band members
reviewed all the material, selected what they wanted, and decided
to
sequence it in chronological order. It was Neil Young who suggested
the
package include the first two Buffalo Springfield albums in their
entirety." (The group's third album, Last Time Around, was released
after
the band broke up and was not recorded with the full involvement
of its
members.)
In 1966 Buffalo Springfield emerged as one of the first true American
supergroups. Comprised initially of Stephen Stills, Neil Young,
Richie
Furay, drummer Dewey Martin, and bassist Bruce Palmer (the latter
eventually replaced by Jim Messina), the group exemplified the
L.A.
folk-rock sound of the late '60s. Its members went on to make
further music
history as solo artists as well as with such groups as Crosby,
Stills, Nash
& Young; Poco; Loggins & Messina; and others.

Buffalo Springfield's "Box Set", expected to
fly years ago, finally arives July 3 on
ATCO/Elektra/Rhino after 10 years of
tinkering at Neil Young's ranch. The
88-track look back at the band that
epitomized '60's L.A. folk-rock has
three discs of mostly unreleased,
chronological cuts from 1966-68, plus
a fourth disc that remasters the
first two albums in full.
"I'm astonished it actually made it to
fruition," marvels Stephen Stills, who
formed the band with Young, Richie Furay,
Dewey Martin and Bruce Palmer. "The band only
made three albums, but we have a box set
with four long CD's, which is a tribute
to Neil's persistence. You can really hear
us learning how to play and how to make records.
"I can't listen to more than two or three songs
because it reminds me too much of how young and
slender I was," Stills says. "It's like revisiting
your childhood neighborhood and being awash in
memories. Only this is in IMAX."
In addition to such classics as For What It's Worth,
Bluebird and Mr. Soul, the $60 set spotlights
such early learning curves as "the insect orchestra,"
Stills says. "We sound like Alvin and The Chipmonks
because we were playing too fast. A producer said,
'That song's too long, play it faster,' as if tempo
didn't matter. Neil and I looked at each other and
said, 'We have to learn to be producers - by tomorrow.'"
Stills credits Young and production coordinator Joel
Bernstein for tracking down an exhaustive recording
history sure to delight obsessive fans.
"Neil's just as obsessive," Stills notes. "He plays
to those crazies."
