Bob Harris BIO
Described by 'Radio Times' as "one of the greats of British contemporary music broadcasting still an independent champion of great music", Bob first established his enduring reputation during his seven years as presenter of 'Old Grey Whistle Test' on BBC 2, recognised throughout the 70's as Britain's premiere television music show. A recent DVD release celebrating the 30th anniversary of the programme topped the UK charts.
As founding co-editor of the listing magazine 'Time Out', compiler of two rock reference books 'Rock and Pop Mastermind' (1986) and 'The Rockdate Diary' (1991) and his work through three decades for the British music press, Bob is an acknowledged author and archivist. He recently completed his autobiography 'The Whispering Years', published by BBC Worldwide.
He has produced records for Atlantic and EMI and is currently releasing a series of 'Bob Harris Presents ' compilations CD's, featuring music from artists he champions on his shows.
He is a television music consultant, has compered big name festivals, has appeared in films and videos and has voiced many commercials, including a coast to coast USA radio campaign on behalf of the Beatles for the release of their 'Anthology II' collection in 1996.
In America, he has interviewed the Beach Boys, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, memorably John Lennon and even President elect Jimmy Carter in 1976. He has worked on radio in Los Angeles, Nashville and Austin and broadcast to the States with the 'Rockdate'-based daily show 'The British Wax Museum'.
But it is for his 30 plus years on British radio that Bob is best known. Beginning in 1970 on Radio 1 with 'Sounds of the 70's', he has broadcast at Radio Luxembourg (1975/76), Radio 210 (1977-1981/where he was also head of music and presentation), BBC Radio Oxford (1981-1984) where he presented the afternoon show), LBC (1986-1989/'Nightline' phone-in/additionally Sony nominated for his weekly review show) and BFBS (the British Forces Broadcasting Service 1986-1998). He returned to Radio 1 in 1990, losing his programmes when the station repositioned in 1993. From there he went on to GLR (1994-1998) and in 1997 to Radio 2, where he hosts the weekly 'Bob Harris Show' (Saturday 10pm) and 'Bob Harris Country' (Thursday 7pm). He has co-hosted the BBC coverage of the annual Country Music Association Awards for the past three years and in 2001 presented the International award at the ceremony in Nashville.
During the past few years Bob has won 3 Sony Bronze Awards for 'Music Broadcaster of the Year' and 'Music Programme of the Year' (1999) and 'The Paul Simon Story' (2001). At the beginning of 2002 he was voted 9th in a 'Radio Times' readers poll entitled 'The Voices We Love The Most'. The 'Mail on Sunday' described him as 'a national treasure'.

Little Richard and Joe Cocker joined hundreds of friends and relatives of Billy Preston in celebrating his musical legacy during an upbeat funeral yesterday (June 20) in Inglewood, Calif.
A brass band played "Amazing Grace" during a service filled with tributes to the prolific songwriter and musician who played with the Beatles so often he was sometimes called the fifth member of the band.
Preston died June 6 in a hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz., at age 59. He battled chronic kidney failure, received a kidney transplant in 2002 and had been in a coma since November.
"He made that piano walk and talk," Little Richard, who toured with Preston in the early 1960s, told the crowd that filled Faithful Central Bible Church's Tabernacle Worship Center. "There's nobody in this world who could play the piano like Billy Preston."
Cocker sang the ballad "You Are So Beautiful," which Preston wrote but was made famous by the raspy-voiced singer.
The mourners also heard letters written by Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and others who
toured with Preston. "I am deeply saddened to lose such a wonderful friend," McCartney wrote. "I love you Billy."
Bonnie Raitt, also in a letter, said Preston was "one of the most soulful artists I ever knew."
In addition to his healthy solo career, Preston toured and recorded with the Rolling Stones and performed in recording sessions with Aretha Franklin, Sly and the Family Stone and Bob Dylan. His duet with Syreeta Wright, "With You I'm Born Again," became a favorite at weddings.
David Crosby, the outspoken founding member of CSNY and The Byrds, turns his wry and unstinting eye to a fascinating, prickly subject: himself.
Known to millions as the trickster poster boy for folkrock utopia and the inspiration for Dennis Hopper's wild-eyed antihero in the film Easy Rider, David Crosby is every bit the quintessential American icon of the counterculture today that he was in the sixties and seventies. Legendary, controversial, beloved, he is never far from the headlines, as the upcoming (Summer 2006) 50-city reunion tour of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young will demonstrate once again.
Since Then is both a self-skewering look at the twists and turns of an impossibly rich life, and Crosby's confident declaration that it's far too soon for him to don the robe and slippers of Generational Elder. As a two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he has an unparalleled legacy as a singer, songwriter, and musician-and few would object if he were to rest on his laurels. Yet despite Crosby's history of extravagant excess, he's never forgotten his great good fortune, and has never stopped using his enormous gifts in service of both his art and social causes to which he is committed.
This memoir shows the contradictory aspects to a personality whose truth-to-power outspokenness, exuberance, and creativity have made him a great and inspirational artist, yet whose struggles with private demons have resulted in arrests, chronic health issues, and ruined friendships. It discusses frankly the people and events that have drastically altered his definition of "family": raising ten-year-old son Django, with lover/wife/partner, Jan; reuniting with his adult son, musician James Raymond, while Crosby waited in the hospital for a life-saving liver transplant; becoming sperm donor to Melissa Etheridge and Julie Cypher. Above all, it illuminates how, despite a staggering series of personal setbacks-including hepatitis C, liver failure, diabetes, heart attacks, and a crippling motorcycle accident-the music, and the people he loves, keep him young at heart.
About the Author
David Crosby, the legendary singer/songwriter/ rock-and-roll bandleader from The Byrds (Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and the psychedelic classic "Eight Miles High") and the "first initial" of the legendary Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, is a two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, from its beginnings in the socially conscious burgeoning California folk scene in the early sixties, his surprising views on gun control, his recovery from drug abuse and deteriorating health, and his influence on a whole new generation of folk-oriented singer/songwriters, Crosby has remained an icon of counterculture, an advocate for social responsibility, and a thorn in the side of hypocrites of all stripes.
Carl Gottlieb wrote the screenplay for Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg; directed the Steve Martin short film The Absent-Minded Waiter, which was nominated for an Academy Award; won an Emmy Award for his work on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour; and coauthored Long Time Gone with David Crosby, a New York Times bestseller. Other writing credits include such classic TV sitcoms as All in the Family, Laverne & Shirley, and The Bob Newhart Show.

Rockers Maroon 5 Share Songwriter of the Year Crown with Rapper Lil Jon and
See 'She Will Be Loved' Named Song of the Year; EMI Music Repeats Publisher
Win
BMI staged its 54th Annual Pop Awards on May 16, with top honors given to
BMI Icons Crosby, Stills & Nash; Jesse Carmichael, Ryan Dusick, Adam Levine
and Mickey Madden of Maroon 5 and Lil Jon as Songwriters of the Year; "She
Will Be Loved" as Song of the Year; and EMI Music as Publisher of the Year.
Hosted by BMI President/ CEO Del Bryant and Los Angeles VP/GM Barbara Cane
at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, the black-tie dinner recognized the
writers and publishers of the past year's 50 most performed pop songs from
BMI's catalog of more than 6.5 million compositions.
A highlight of the gala ceremony featured a musical tribute to legendary
singing trio Crosby, Stills & Nash, who were honored as BMI Icons for their
"unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers." The Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, whose signature three-part harmony has
endured for more than three decades, join an elite list of previous BMI
Icons that includes Paul Simon, James Brown, Brian Wilson, Isaac Hayes,
Dolly Parton and Carlos Santana.
The musical partnership of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash has
produced some of the most timeless rock songs ever written, including
"Marrakesh Express," "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," "Helplessly Hoping,"
"Guinnevere," "Teach Your Children," "Wooden Ships," "Dark Star" and "Just a
Song Before I Go." Called "the voice of an entire generation," CSN has just
announced a summer reunion tour with Neil Young.
Pop-rockers Maroon 5 were joined on stage by rapper Lil Jon to collect their
BMI Songwriter of the Year Crystals for placing three songs each on the most
performed list of 50. The trio of tracks earning Maroon 5 members Jesse
Carmichael, Ryan Dusick, Adam Levine and Mickey Madden the prestigious title
were "Sunday Morning," their two-time BMI Pop Award-winning smash, "This
Love," and Song of the Year "She Will Be Loved."
Lil Jon picked up his third Songwriter of the Year win - he was both BMI's
top Pop and Urban writer in 2005 - for penning "Lovers and Friends" (Lil Jon
& the East Side Boyz featuring Usher & Ludacris), "Goodies" (Ciara featuring
Petey Pablo) and "Salt Shaker" (Ying Yang Twins featuring Lil Jon), the
latter two of which also made the list of top songs at the 2005 BMI Urban
Awards. He was also honored at that ceremony as writer of the Song of the
Year ("Yeah!"), as well as named one of BMI's Top 10 Urban Producers.
Included on Maroon 5's multi-platinum debut, Songs About Jane, "She Will Be
Loved" was named BMI Pop Song of the Year for scoring the most airplay of
any song on the most performed list during the award period. Co-written by
the band's four BMI members, and published by Careers-BMG Music Publishing
and February Twenty-Second Music, "She Will Be Loved" earned Maroon 5 their
second Grammy this past February for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group
with Vocal; they were named Best New Artist the previous year.
EMI Music Publishing (EMI-Blackwood Music, Inc./EMI-Hastings Catalog,
Inc./Stone Diamond Music) claimed its second consecutive BMI Pop Publisher
of the Year prize with 18 songs on the top 50 list, giving the publishing
giant the highest percentage of copyright ownership in award songs. EMI
Chairman & CEO Martin Bandier accepted the company's 11th BMI Pop Publisher
Crystal.
In addition to the Song of the Year, BMI also recognized the performance
achievements of two other songs: "Beverly Hills" earned Most Performed Song
on College Radio kudos for songwriter Rivers Cuomo of Weezer and publisher
E.O. Smith Music, and "1, 2 Step," written by BMI Top 10 Urban Producer
Jazze Pha and published by Bubba Gee Music, Noontime Tunes and
Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp., received BMI's very first Internet Song
of the Year award by tallying the most hits on BMI-licensed web sites during
the award period.
Three other songs besides "This Love" took home a second BMI Pop Award,
including "Heaven" by Los Lonely Boys, which also won last year; D.H.T.'s
version of "Listen to Your Heart," which earned a Pop Award in 1990 for the
recording by Roxette; and the Hall & Oates remake of "I'll Be Around," which
won a Pop Award in 1972 for the original Spinners hit written by Thom Bell
and Phil Hurtt.
Songwriters Gavin DeGraw, Kara DioGuardi, George Pajon, Jr., will.i.am of
the Black Eyed Peas, Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes, and Full Force
members Paul Anthony, Baby Gerry, B-Fine, Bowlegged Lou, Curt-T-T and Shy
Shy each scored two BMI Pop Awards, while publishers Careers-BMG Music
Publishing/Zomba Songs, Cherry River Music Co., Dimensional Songs of the
Knoll, El Cubano Music, Ensign Music LLC, February Twenty-Second Music,
Forceful Music/Mokojumbi Music, G. DeGraw Music, Inc., K'Stuff Publishing,
Songs of TVT, Sony/ATV Songs LLC, Universal Music Publishing Group (Songs of
Universal, Inc./Irving Music), Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp., Waters of
Nazareth Publishing and will.i.am music, inc. were each cited for multiple
award-winning songs.
Another of the ceremony's highlights included a special presentation to
21-year-old Catawba College student Dennis E. Reed, Jr., first place winner
of the BMI Foundation's 9th Annual John Lennon Scholarship Awards. The
Charlotte, North Carolina native, who got to share the stage with some of
music's biggest stars, went home with a $10,000 scholarship for his song,
"Out of Control." Established in 1997 by Yoko Ono in conjunction with the
BMI Foundation and matched by generous donations from Gibson Musical
Instruments, the John Lennon Scholarship program recognizes the talent of
young songwriters between the ages of 15 and 24.
